The Song of Mary is known as the Magnificat – Latin for [My Soul] Magnifies.
It is a beautiful song of praise!
When Mary was visited by the angel Gabriel and was told she had been favored by God and chosen as the virgin who would give birth to the Messiah, her heart overjoyed, broke out in song!
Mary believed. Completely.
The legacy that Mary leaves to us is that of a Woman of faith. It is written in Luke 1:28
The angel went to her and said, ‘Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.’
We can get a glimpse into Mary’s character from this verse. First we are told that Mary was “highly favored” meaning chosen, privileged, distinguished.
What made her distinguished? In her song, we can read that Mary humbled herself before God. She knew of him and reverenced him. She recognized who she was before her God and gave him all the honor.
This verse also says, “The Lord is with you.” This implies a companionship. God was going to take Mary by the hand and lead her in her high calling. She trusted in him and believed. She knew that nothing was impossible for God.
I am the Lord’s servant, Mary answered. May it be to me as you have said.
“Such complete resignation and surrender of the heart to God makes Mary, by God’s grace, a truly noble woman.” Frances Vander Velde
Take a moment to think about where God is leading you and what He is asking of you.
What is your reaction to that calling?
I pray that we too may burst into song like Mary, and believe wholeheartedly that He who promised is faithful.
